Rebuild Your Core, Restore Your Body, and Bring Your Baby Along

Finding time to exercise as a new mum can feel impossible. Traditional gyms don't accommodate newborns, and generic fitness classes often ignore the specific recovery needs of a postpartum body.

"Crybaby" Postnatal Pilates at Physio Effect is our signature, physiotherapist-led rehabilitation program designed specifically for mums from 6 weeks postpartum onwards. Held in our private studio at the Everyday Athlete (EDA) Gym in North Glasgow, these progressive blocks focus on closing abdominal separation, rebuilding pelvic floor strength, and relieving the aches of early motherhood—and your pre-crawling baby is fully welcome to come with you.

A Worry-Free Environment: The class is named "Crybaby" for a reason. If your baby cries, needs a nappy change, or wants to feed mid-session, there is absolutely zero judgment. You can pause, tend to your baby, and jump right back into the exercises whenever you are ready.

The Clinical Framework: What We Focus On

Because these sessions are designed and taught exclusively by our Chartered Physiotherapist & Pilates guru Mariam Kilpatrick, she combines advanced postgraduate training in pelvic health with years of clinical teaching to ensure your exercises are treated as precise clinical rehabilitation.

  • Targeted Diastasis Recti Repair: We systematically check and safely load your abdominal wall to resolve Diastasis Recti (abdominal separation) and restore functional core tension.

  • Pelvic Floor Progressive Loading: Go beyond basic, static kegels. We train your pelvic floor to coordinate naturally with your breath and movement, resolving issues with leaking or heaviness.

  • Postural Realignment: Targets the specific muscular strains of early motherhood, opening up tight shoulders, strengthening the upper back, and easing lower back or pelvic pain caused by carrying and feeding.

How the Class Blocks Work

To ensure you receive close, individual attention and a safe progression of exercises, our classes are structured to give you the highest quality of care.

  • Strictly Limited Class Sizes: We keep our group sizes small so your physiotherapist can monitor your form in real-time and adapt any exercise to your specific delivery history (straightforward, assisted, or C-section).

  • The 1:1 Prep Prerequisite: To protect your safety, all participants must attend a brief 1:1 Clinical Pilates Screening with our team before starting their first block. This allows us to assess your baseline core activation and check for any joint vulnerabilities.

  • What to Bring: Just bring yourself, your baby, a favorite blanket or mat for your baby to lie on next to you, and any changing or feeding essentials you need. We provide all the specialized clinical Pilates mats and equipment.

Crybaby Pilates FAQs

  • We recommend starting from 6 weeks postpartum following a straightforward vaginal delivery, or 8 weeks postpartum following a C-section or assisted birth. This ensures your body has completed its initial phase of natural tissue healing before we begin progressive loading.

  • This is exactly what the class is designed for! The entire environment is completely relaxed. You are free to stop at any point during the session to feed, comfort, rock, or change your baby. Your physiotherapist will help you safely transition back into the workout whenever you and your baby are settled.

  • Because our classes run in tight, progressive blocks with limited numbers to maintain safety, we cannot offer drop-in make-up sessions. However, your therapist will ensure you receive the core focuses of any missed week so you can easily keep up with the progression of the group.

This is a great class of which I did 2 blocks after the birth of my daughter (having a grade 3 tear). Mariam is a trained physiotherapist who adjusts the exercises to individual needs. The size of the groups are small enough to receive individual attention and it’s very relaxed if you need to stop and breastfeed your baby (which I needed to do most sessions). This is a must class for regaining post-birth core strength and recommending this to all my pregnant friends.
